“The elusive 'religion of the spirit' (Sufism), with its grades, acquired stages and its granted psychological conditions, derives from music (melody) consider-able spiritual benefit, and each one of the Sufis listens to it, and is affected by it, according to his stage (level of being) and psychological state.   Thus music which was frowned upon by the rigid theologians, became to Sufism an essential element in its ritual and practice, conducive to the ardently sought religious ecstasy.”
